D4D | Debating for Democracy | Engaging Elected Officials

Debating for Democracy (D4D)™ is a distinctive campus-based co-curricular program that represents the mission of Project Pericles in action. On each campus, Periclean students research, develop, and advocate their opinions and positions on current public policy issues. Students will produce a co-written, two-page letter to an elected official advocating for a legislative response to a current issue. The primary goal of D4D is to inspire and encourage all participants to become successful and resourceful advocates in their community. Out of the thirty Periclean institutions, five winning teams will be selected to receive $500 towards mobilizing on their issue back at their home college the following year. Civic Engagement On Campus

TPP is committed to promoting civic engagement and democratic practices on campus. Activities have included: 

•  Letter writing to elected officials through Project Pericles "D4D: Debating for Democracy Letters to an Elected Official" competition

Getting to the Core 

Funded ad brought together by the Racial Justice Initiative, the CEC, Writing Center, CAPAS, and Activist Margo Okazawa-Rey sought to building programming to support student leaders during the difficult period of the pandemic and social unrest.  With programs and trainings planned across the spring semester, Getting to the Core as a group sought to speak to the intrinsic motivations that drive student leaders to their civic and community engagement. Unlike many of the co-curricular workshop series that already existed, this group focused on building rapport and dialogue within one cohort of students from various cenes. In connecting their own experiences and backgrounds with knowledge fom popular education framworks and critical race theory, students were given the opportunity to support one another through cathartic exchanges of communications and reflections.
